The theme of the show is somewhat secretive so far. His official press release only says […]

Meet Me In New York: Kate Willett

What do they say about New York City: There are eight million stories, and sometimes it seems as though eight million of the people telling them think they’re comedians? No, that’s not it. It is a fact, though, that America’s biggest city is also its biggest comedy mecca. Hollywood may be Hollywood, but New York […]

Hasan Minhaj’s ‘Homecoming King’ Is an American Story, Whether You Get the References or Not

When I first stumbled across Hasan Minhaj’s YouTube videos back in 2012, I was at a strange point in my evolution as a comedy consumer, where my identity as a budding comedy nerd and my identity as an Indian-Canadian were somewhat at odds. For as much as I loved standup and was fascinated by the […]

Back when I was a lad in the nineteen-hundred and eighties, standup showcase shows were on cable television 24 hours a day, and I watched every single one of them. They were all good to me and my insatiable appetite for standup, but the big ones were on HBO. I seldom had access to HBO, […]

EXCLUSIVE FULL ALBUM PREMIERE: Scout Durwood – ‘Take One Thing Off’

“I came up as a performer in queer nightlife, so a lot of what other pop songs were about didn’t resonate with me,” comedian, actress and singer Scout Durwood says about “Go Go,” one of the 19 tracks that make up her debut musical comedy album Take One Thing Off. After one listen of the entire album, however, one can argue the dearth of popular music easily embraced by the LGBTQ community is why Take One Thing Off exists. So much more than a set of goofy songs, Take One Thing Off is a collection of expertly crafted pop tunes – with help from acclaimed producer Dave Darling – that will bounce around your brains for days on end. It helps that Durwood’s pipes are on par or better than most of the disposable pop stars of 2017.
